Why Salsa and what does that have to do with facing the other side? How can something like dancing face the other side?
You may probably think I mainly chose learning Salsa because it’s about learning a new skill and because I am super passionate about dancing. However, this is not even the case. But let me explain: I believe you can mainly learn something new because of three inward urges. Intuition, Passion or Fear. Doing something out of passion is great. It’s usually where your talents lie and you have the most fulfilment, but it also tends to be within the realms of your comfort zone. Doing something because you fear it and you want to face that fear/insecurity is the opposite approach.
Your Intuition as a third force does not differentiate between the two. It is more like an innate voice that tells you what is right and wrong. I believe each of these three urges are important and have their right to exist but the Master of Love and Life emphasizes on two of them. Intuition and Fear.
One vital element of the Master of Love and Life is to go where the fear is. And for most western people including me, it is super difficult to just go out and express themselves freely on the dancefloor. Imagine you are at a party and there is no one dancing but a nice song comes up, could you just go confidently to the middle of the dancefloor and start to dance and express yourself without caring what everyone else is thinking? Or even harder as a guy: could you just go to a random girl and ask her for a dance? Then walk confidently with her to the dancefloor and start dancing while no one else is dancing but everyone is watching you?
If you can’t get rid of your skeletons in your closet, you’d best take it out and teach it to dance – George Bernard Shaw
Most people already shiver when they just read these lines or they think they can do it, but then they realize that it only works after their fifth drink or even after they ingested other substances. I believe social dancing is for many of us a source of great insecurities. But why is that the case?
Let’s start from another perspective: I deeply believe in the power of Bodywork. ( read more about Why Bodywork is so important here) Dancing is a soft but still a form of Bodywork. I believe it is a great way to start this Master project with because it is a very gentle form of releasing. Of getting in touch not only with your feelings & emotions but also with your blockades. Moreover moving or movement in general is a great way to start breaking out of your rational mind-set because it does not intellectualize things but rather helps you to just be present, feel your body and through that to reconnect you with your intuition and to feel and express yourself.
When Bodywork can reveal a lot about your feelings, emotions and blockades to you personally, this also works at least on an intuitive level for external parties. Dancing makes you transparent. Others will intuitively sense how free you are, how centered you are and how confident you are. Not by chance is dancing a key criteria for the choice of partner. You’re revealing a lot with it. You can probably talk around your personality and fool people but your body doesn’t lie. And this fear of being transparent of getting rejected by our peers is what we fear the most.
I chose learning Salsa as my first course, because I wanted to face these fears & insecurities and my intuition drew me to Columbia. So I travelled to Cali, the Worlds capital of Salsa, to learn Salsa in 30 days and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done. If you want to know more about How I actually learned Salsa in 30 Days, what success system I used, How you can do it too and what hardships I faced You can read my Experience report here
